Energy characterization and energy-saving strategies in sustainable machining processes: A state-of-the-art review

A growing number of manufacturing industries are gradually shifting towards sustainable and clean manufacturing due to its raising demand in production cost, energy consumption and environmental pollution. Hence, concern about energy-efficient and environmentally benign manufacturing process have become an emerging issue. This review paper suggests state of the art energy characterization and energy-saving strategies in the manufacturing processes. Sustainable machining processes are discussed according to the application of various coolants/lubricants. Energy consumption was classified according to machine tool components, functionality states of machine tool, and levels of the manufacturing process. Theories and technologies in the assessment and modelling of energy characteristics were reviewed, and general energy-saving strategies were discussed at the assessment level, software-based optimization level, and cutting level. Besides, energy consumption models were discussed. Reducing resource-based energy consumption in machining processes helps in (1) environmental evolution of machine tools (ISO14955-1) (2) tool condition monitoring (3) establishing energy-efficient machining process, and (4) designing new machine tool structure.
